Guest Post:Top Tips for a Green Beauty Routine

collage 100 perc.jpgAre you trying to make a difference in the world and green up your life? Luckily it is not as hard as it used to be. You just need to make simple changes in your everyday beauty routine, and you will already be living a nature-friendly life. Follow these tips and you will look good and feel good about helping Mother Nature.

1. Buy Refill Bottles

Like most of us, you have probably switched entirely from bar soaps to liquid soap. In terms of hygiene, this was a smart decision as much less bacteria are transferred this way. However, think about how many plastic bottles you have in your house at the moment, and how often you replace them. All that plastic going to garbage makes a huge impact on the environment. And on your wallet, too. A greener solution is to buy gallon size bottles of products and refillable dispensers. One refillable dispenser can last for years and almost all personal care products today come in these economical packages – hand soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner.

2. Read the labels

We go to a store and buy a certain skin care product assuming that it must be harmless for our health since it is there on the shelf. The majority of people chooses products based on their smell or package, rarely bothering to look at the ingredients. Stop this habit now and take some time to read the labels. You will be surprised how many chemicals, which are known to be detrimental to human health and to the planet, are contained in conventional skin care products. Avoid all products that contain parabens, phthalates, lead, mercury, toluene, formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, or BHA. If you are not sure about certain ingredients, better choose a natural product. A great and reliable cosmetics brand I use and recommend is 100 percent pure UK which offers a wide range or organic cosmetics: natural eye shadows, lip balms, face moisturisers, body creams etc.

3. Shop Local

Visit your local farmer’s market or search online for small family-owned companies that produce skin care products in your vicinity. Apart from doing a good deed for your local community by supporting its economic growth, you will be able to ask the producers questions about their products and production processes. Most likely, you will even be able to witness these processes yourself and make sure the products are safe for use. They can even advise you about what products are suitable for your skin type and perhaps even adjust them slightly to better fit your skin's needs.

4. Use Multi-Tasking Products

How many different products do you use on a daily basis? Shampoo, conditioner, night cream, day cream, lip balm, washes, exfoliators, moisturizers… The list goes on and on. There is really no need to buy a shower gel and a bubble bath. Your facial moisturizer can be used as an eye cream as well. Did you know that your conditioner can work as shaving cream? There are so many products that can serve multiple purposes. Try to eliminate as many as possible from your beauty regime.

5. Recycle

There is no talking about green living, without mentioning recycling. This is the most important step you must take if you want to turn green. If you do not have separate garbage bins for used cosmetics bottles and packages, many organic stores accept this type of waste and dispose of it for you. Just find one in your neighbourhood.
How green is your beauty routine? Have you already been taking any of these steps?
